Good news. The Minnesota DOT will give Hopkins Volunteers a section of highway that goes through our town. It's Hwy 169 between Hwy 7 and Hwy 62.
I have had this section of highway with another group for the past two years, but I have lacked for volunteers. I feel that this change will bring new energy to the trash picking. I think that I can recruit students from Hopkins High School using the Depot as a gathering place.
It will take a few months for the DOT to put up the new signs.
The DOT provides the signage, the bags, and the vests.

Help needed
The Minnetonka Creek trash picking appears to be scheduled by some Hopkins High School students under the direction of the Minnehaha Creek Watershed district. That's a good thing.
I will be meeting with Destiny Holiday on Monday the 3rd of May. Destiny is interested in helping the youth of the community and I will see what she has working. I will keep you all posted.
I need some help with trash picking on Hwy 169 on May 1st and May 8th. Meet at the Caribou Coffee at Bren Road and Hwy 169 in Edina between 8:30 and 9:00 AM. Rain has interfered with trash picking on this section of highway and so I am looking for the help that I can get.
I have gloves, bags, vests, rakes etc. Plan on an hour to two hours.

Trash picking needed along Minnehaha Creek/Cambridge St.
There is a real need for a group of trash pickers to clean up Minnehaha Creek at Cambridge St. This job would be too big for our small group of volunteers.
I have sent an e-mail to the Minnehaha Creek people. I have suggested that there is no trashier area along Minnehaha Creek than this area. I stated that there was no place along Minnehaha Creek that was in greater need for volunteers than this place
I will let you all know how Minnehaha Creek responds to my message. I hope that a date could be set where some volunteers would clean up the place. I am happy to provide bags and long-handled rakes.

Trash picked on Cambridge St.
After breakfast at Hoagie's on April 10th, , Norman and Bill Freiberg picked trash along Cambridge St. It was a mess. We worked for 45 minutes to an hour and picked a half dozen bags. We clambered up and down the steep embankment like a couple of mountain goats. It was great fun.

Welcome
This blog originates from the Hopkins Citizens Academy class of 2010.
Participants in that class wish to continue their civic service and have agreed to swap names and e-mail addresses. The idea is to continue to socialize and to participate in such civic action projects as the group may choose.
The class graduation will be at on April 6, 2010 at 7 PM at City Hall.
The first meeting of the HCA Volunteers is scheduled for Saturday, April 10, 2010 at Hoagie's on Main St. Can we have breakfast together at 8:30 AM?
